Alcohol Our Social Drug Workbook and DVD/Video by John Hickey (Classroom Resources)
This resource contains a 20-minute video/DVD and a 22-page photocopiable booklet with information and exercises for the whole ability range. It is mainly intended for use in PHSE lessons. The video/DVD provides clear information on the effects of alcohol and the reasons people drink it, and features interviews with young people and advisers. It is fronted by a young presenter and encourages young people to be informed about alcohol, to be aware of its effects and to encourage each individual to make rational and informed decisions about it. In the booklet there are suggestions as to how to follow up the video/DVD in the form of a variety of exercises for use in small groups or whole classes. These include a wordsearch, cloze, matching pairs and true and false tasks - all with answers - plus the design and execution of a survey on alcohol. The booklet also contains a series of information sheets that can be used as classroom posters or to stimulate discussion and work in the classroom. These sheets contain information about the effects of alcohol, explain the concept of the 'standard drink' and explore the reasons why young people use alcohol. They also contain some basic facts about alcohol as well as an outline of the legal situation in the UK. Teachers have complete flexibility in using them to suit particular classes and age groups as all the sheets are photocopiable. The video/DVD and booklet are suitable for ages 13 to 18 and are suitable for all abilities.
