STDs – The Facts is an Australian-made video/DVD written and presented by practising doctors to give a teenage audience practical advice on the types of sexually transmitted diseases that exist, their symptoms and medical approaches to curing or containing them. It includes information on both bacterial and viral diseases and methods of prevention. The language chosen, whilst scientific in nature, is nonetheless easily accessible to the target audience. It is ideal for use in PSHE or Science Lessons with a sex education focus. It is suitable for use with pupils across the secondary age range and could even be used with sixth form pupils. The information presented in the video/DVD is backed up by a UK workbook: STIs – The Facts, which tests comprehension of the material presented in the video/DVD, provides activities to test pupils’ prior knowledge before watching the video, and memory retrieval, extension and application of that knowledge after watching the video/DVD. The 20 worksheets are accompanied by teachers’ notes, which together form a self-supportive scheme of work.
